President Tsai Ing-wen and her administration are riding high in the opinion polls following the DPP''s electoral triumph. A new survey puts Tsai''s public approval at 56.7%. Approval for her premier was at 56.2%, the highest it''s ever been. According to Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, which conducted the poll, the numbers highlight the president''s remarkable comeback from her humiliation in 2018. But in this same opinion poll, a relative majority said they would not want Tsai back at the DPP as chairwoman. Tsai won the presidential election with an unprecedented 8.17 million votes. She''s also rebounded in the opinion polls, with an approval rating of 56.7%. According to the same poll, 56.2% are satisfied or very satisfied with Su Tseng-chang, whose rating is the highest it''s ever been. You Ying-lungTaiwan Public Opinion FoundationShe''s returned to glory. This is after the entire year of 2019, following her crushing defeat in the nine-in-one elections in 2018. She''s undergone a metamorphosis. She''s Tsai Ing-wen 2.0. She now has the renewed support and affirmation of the absolute majority of Taiwanese. According to the survey, 45% did not want Tsai to become DPP chairwoman again, despite her success in the election. That''s 12 percentage points more than those who favored Tsai as chair. You Ying-lungTaiwan Public Opinion FoundationPublic favor can''t always remain high. There are times when it comes down. In the absence of major incidents, my forecast is that Tsai Ing-wen''s popularity will start to decline at the moment she reenters the DPP headquarters and returns as DPP chairwoman.Worth noting is that, compared to May 2016, fewer people considered Tsai to be "pro-independence." Respondents with that view were down by nearly 30 points in the latest survey. In contrast, respondents who saw Tsai as "pro-status quo" increased by more than 42 points.
