STORYLINE
Jewish settlers in Hebron went to the Ibrahimi Mosque, also known as the Tomb of the Patriarchs, for prayers on Friday, in a move that risked raising tensions in the volatile West Bank city as a dispute over a building rages on.
According to eyewitnesses, thousands of settlers arrived at the spot to mark the Sabbath. Once every year Jews read a part of the Bible recounting the purchase of a burial plot in Hebron by the patriarch Abraham.
The shrine, known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque, has been a flashpoint for violence in the past.
Only a day earlier Jewish settlers spray-painted graffiti on another mosque slurring the Prophet Muhammad and defaced a Muslim cemetery, Israeli military officials said.
Israeli security forces quickly removed the graffiti and were cleaning the cemetery, the army said.
The mosque stands next to a building that has become a flashpoint for tensions between settlers and Palestinians.
Settlers say they bought the building from a Palestinian, but the Palestinian, Fayez Al-Rajabi, denies the claim.
Israel's Supreme Court has ordered settlers to leave the building while the ownership dispute is settled.
Al-Rajabi said the occupants of the building keep using stalling tactics even though the court-imposed deadline for them to leave has expired.
Israel's defence minister has pledged to evict them within 30 days if they don't leave voluntarily.
Hebron is divided into Israeli and Palestinian-controlled sections.
Around 500 settlers live in guarded enclaves in the city's centre among 170-thousand Palestinians.
Military vehicles were also vandalised, it said.
