Clashes at demo marking deaths of 29 in Hebron

(22 Feb 2019) Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli troops on Friday at a demonstration in the West Bank city of Hebron. The protest marked the 25th anniversary of the closure of the city's Shuhada Street after Baruch Goldstein, an American immigrant doctor, shot and killed 29 Palestinian worshippers at a Hebron mosque in 1994. Shuhada street, Hebron's main street, was closed to Palestinians by the Israeli army directly after the "Cave of the Patriarchs" massacre, as Goldstein's extremist action is known. Palestinians have called for Shuhada Street to be reopened, saying its closure is disruptive and helps to cement Israeli control over the area. Israel recently expelled an international observer force from Hebron. The civilian observer mission (Temporary International Presence in Hebron or TIPH) has deployed unarmed civilian observers from Norway, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey in Hebron since 1997. They report on violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws. Hebron, the West Bank's largest city, is a frequent flashpoint between settlers and Palestinians. Over 200,000 Palestinians live in the city, along with several hundred ultranationalist Israeli settlers who live in the down town area in heavily fortified enclaves protected by the military.
