Watch as Parents Magazine explains these baby care basics! You may know the basics of newborn care, but there are some symptoms of illness that should have you reaching for the phone. If you see a soft bump in the belly button area that gets noticeable when your baby cries, it could be an infant hernia. Most eventually go away on their own, but a doctor should make this call. If your little one has a swollen eye or eyelid with a fever, even if their is no redness in the white of the eye, it could be a sign of Orbital Cellulitis. Uncontrollable coughing is also worrisome. A baby cough accompanied by wheezing is reason to call a doctor. Swollen eyes, hands, or feet could be a sign of Sickle Cell Anemia, a genetic disorder that causes babies to produce abnormal red blood cells. All babies are screened for it in the hospital after delivery, but the symptoms could still appear after four months. Any significant changes in your baby's diaper, such as blood or a strange consistency, warrant a call to your doctor.
