Watch as Parents Magazine explains these baby care basics! Even if your home is baby-proofed from floor to ceiling, your curious child is bound to get hurt at some point--it's just a part of growing up. When this happens, you need to stay calm. One of the most common baby accidents is a head bump from a fall. Your reaction should depend on the severity of the situation. If your baby loses consciousness, call an ambulance. If not, wrap an ice pack in a cloth and hold it on the bump, watching her like a hawk for the next 24 hours. If she starts vomiting, won't stop crying, is lethargic, or simply isn't acting like herself, call a doctor. Burns or scalds only need cool, running water over the area until the pain subsides. Follow your doctor's instructions exactly for burns and scalds. If the burn is over a large area, is on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or if it starts to blister, call your doctor. Eye trauma requires a cool, wet cloth over the area, but head to the ER if your baby seems in pain or if her eyes won't stop tearing. If you think your baby may have ingested a poisonous substance, call Poison Control at 800-222-1222 immediately. Store this number in your phone and on your refrigerator in case your child-proofing didn't keep her out of the cupboards. Whether it is one of these or another type of common accident, call your doctor if you're ever uneasy about your baby's safety!
