Watch as Parents Magazine explains these baby care basics! Shaken baby syndrome is a severe form of trauma that occurs when a baby or small child is shaken to the point of brain damage. Because of their weak necks and softer brains, babies are especially vulnerable. Even just four or five seconds of shaking a child can cause blindness, eye injuries, long-term mental or physical problems, and even death. Shaken baby syndrome often occurs when an exhausted parent or caregiver loses control. If you find yourself in this extreme position, try letting him cry. There is nothing abusive about letting your child cry in a safe place as you take a breather. Take 10 slow, deep breaths and remind yourself how young your child is. Ask a friend or relative to take over while you take some time for yourself. If you think a caregiver or spouse may have shaken your baby in a moment of frustration, go to an emergency room right away. Shaken baby syndrome symptoms can worsen quickly if gone untreated!
