Hundreds of workers from the metallurgical sector marched through the industrial zone and the centre of Cadiz, on Thursday, on the third day of a strike in the sector.

Early in the morning, protesters clashed with riot police officers, who fired rubber bullets at them.

Later in the day, striking workers went to the Cadiz city hall, where Mayor Jose Maria Gonzalez Santos ‘Kichi’ addressed them with words of support.

“We are talking about dignity, and we are talking about that when we are no longer in a working age, our sons and our daughters can take the lead,” said Kichi amid applauses.

The roughly 30,000 employees of the metal sector in Cadiz began an indefinite strike on Tuesday to demand a wage increase and improvements in their working conditions.

The first and second days of the strike ended with incidents and clashes between picketers and law enforcement.
