Offer floral tributes to statue
Followers of the Dravidian ideology and cadres of the Dravidian political parties remembered Periyar E.V. Ramasamy Naicker on his 139th birth anniversary in Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Tiruvarur on Sunday.
In Thanjavur, Dravidar Kazhagam district president Amar Singh, zonal secretary Ayyanar, town president Narendran, town secretary Murugesan, State women’s wing secretary Kalaiselvi and others garlanded the statue of Periyar near the Old Bus Stand.
Staff and students of Periyar Maniammai University, led by Vice-Chancellor Sundar Manoharan and Dean Srividya, offered floral tribute to the statue.
On behalf of the DMK, former district organiser Selvam, treasurer L.G. Anna, town president Arumugam, medical wing organiser Anjugam Bhupathy and others garlanded the statue. Congress party town president Rajendran, former president Nanji Varadarajan and others garlanded the statue.
Representatives of political parties, including CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Tamil Desiya Padukappu Kazhagam, also offered floral tributes to Periyar.
In Kumbakonam, DMK cadres led by party North district secretary S. Kalyanasundaram paid their respects to Periyar by garlanding his statue near the Old Bus Stand.
In Tiruvarur, the Dravidar Kazhagam and DMK cadres garlanded the statue of Periyar at Odachery Samathuvapuram to mark the occasion.
