GAO PING: 白日梦 Daydreams – a suite for piano
Pianist Tony Chen Lin performs Gao Ping’s ‘白日梦 Daydreams – a suite for piano’ in this Resound film shot at Wellington’s St Andrew’s On The Terrace last September.
In six movements - Twilight, Song Without Words, Dance 1, Blues Over a Lost Phone, Dance 2 and Wind Prayers - the music evokes subjects typical of daydreams in the manner of the ‘literary sketches’ that are traditional in Chinese literature.
As with a number of piano works by Gao Ping, the pianist also sings. Watch out for this in the movement titled ‘Blues Over a Lost Phone’, after the composer’s experience of losing his phone in a taxi.
Audio was recorded by RNZ Concert (engineering and production by Darryl Stack) - our thanks as always.
Film funded by NZ On Air.
