New York City’s Staten Island district was seen inundated on Wednesday after remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded streets across the city.

Footage showed a rescue team approaching a public bus surrounded by floodwaters, freeing passengers one by one and bringing them to safety.

Heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service to issue the first-ever flash flood emergency warning for New York City. The NWS recorded 80 mm (3.15 inches) of rain in one hour in downtown NYC.

Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the state of emergency shortly before midnight, saying the city was ‘enduring a historic weather event’ with ‘record-breaking rain’ and ‘brutal flooding.’

The whole state of New Jersey is also under a state of emergency.
