The New York City subway service was suspended on Wednesday night after remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded streets and stations across the city.

Footage shows Manhattan’s 28th street station cordoned off and NYC’s transit authority workers inspecting the tracks. Heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service to issue the first-ever flash flood emergency warning for New York City on Wednesday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the state of emergency shortly before midnight, saying the city was ‘enduring a historic weather event’ with ‘record-breaking rain’ and ‘brutal flooding.’

The NWS recorded 80 mm (3.15 inches) of rain in one hour in downtown NYC. The whole state of New Jersey, where at least one died, was also put under a state of emergency.
