Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2.0 Planar T* Lens Video Test (Tested with Sony A7SII)
This is the Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2.0 Planar T* E mount lens 4K Video Test. First of all, the build quality of the lens is awesome. Fully metal body even the lens hood. Very solid. Secondly, focus ring is very smooth. Great for focus pulling. (Not focus by wire) And I like how they have the aperture ring on the lens. Although this lens doesn't not have auto focus. But as I am a video guy. I wouldn't mind at all.
I shot this video while I was in Sydney. This is a really sharp lens even at f/2. I don't have much to complain about this lens. It's nice and compact. Very well balance when use it on A7 series full frame cameras.
So what's the difference between Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2.0 Planar T* and the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 Sonnar T* ZA lens? Are they the same? Um... Not really!! The Sony version of the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 one is $200 cheaper than Loxia version. And it supports the auto focus and slightly brighter aperture. Also the Zeiss Loxia 50mm is made by Zeiss (Made in Japan). But the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* is made by Sony (Made in Thailand). I can’t say which one is better. Because they are pretty much a different line. I would say, none of these lenses will go wrong. But for some people who prefers auto focus more for stills, then Sony Zeiss 55mm is the way to go. But if you were thinking to do a lot of focus pulling video, then the Loxia 50mm f/2.0 is a much better choice.
