US President Donald Trump said that stronger relations between the US and Russia would be considered “a good thing, not a bad thing” but refused to divulge whether his administration would engage in a change in policy on sanctions against Russia, at a press conference in Washington DC, Friday.
Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Theresa May, the president said that “as far as the sanctions – [it's] very early to be talking about that” but added: “if we can have a great relationship with Russia and with China and with all countries I’m all for that, that would be a tremendous asset.”
He went on to reference the anticipated future relationship between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating:
“I don’t know the gentleman, I hope we have a fantastic relationship, that’s possible and it’s also possible that we won’t, we will see what happens.”
Trump also iterated the importance of the two countries working together to fight the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) which he described as “an evil that has to be stopped.”
