Coming up next is a true hidden treasure of the horror genre called Underhell. It's a standalone Source game by Mxthe that's by far the best, most ambitious fan-made mod ever created on the engine. Underhell takes elements from your favorite FPS and horror games and combines them into one 10 hour narrative. The prologue is a short tactical shooter that feels like F.E.A.R. 1 crossed with Insurgency, but the meat of the game is a System Shock 2-esque survival horror set in a high-tech prison. You must scrounge for food, bandages, batteries, and ammo while hiding in cabinets from zombies. Both chapters are preceded by a spooky walking sim set in Jake Underhell's house. Though not a true open-world game, the level design is non-linear enough that you feel like you're really travelling throughout the prison even if it's ultimately a scripted, linear experience.
So with all that praise, you might be thinking that Underhell is perfection, right? Well I have one word for you: tortellini. Underhell's many ambitions are ultimately its undoing, as it gets overindulgent with too many janky gameplay mechanics and cutscenes with some of the most fucking awful dialogue you will ever hear. Mxthe clearly pushed Source way too far, and it shows with its horrendous optimization due to Source SDK 2007 only utilizing one CPU core. It's the dialogue that really gets me, though. I know that at the end of the day Underhell's just a mod, but there's way too much dialogue for how inexperienced the voice actors were. It's weird, too, because the nightmare sequences get everything right and are by far the scariest parts of Underhell. They used minimal dialogue, cryptic messages, and the fear of nothingness to really drive it home.
...My God, we live in a world where Hunt Down the Freeman got financial backing and was published on Steam while Underhell will remain unfinished forever.
