Xi'an (simplified Chinese: 西安 ) is the capital city of the Shaanxi province, located in the geographical heart of China. It is one of the oldest places in the country and generally considered to be the cultural and historical capital.
Xi'an therefore attracts many tourists, from overseas and domestically. The prime attractions are the Muslim quarter, where people usually take a stroll and a bite at the end of the day, the ancient city wall, and of course the world famous Terracotta Warriors.
The Terracotta Warriors, or Army (simplified Chinese: 兵马俑) are one of the most stunning archaeological findings of the 20th century. It was discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers digging a water well.
China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang ( 秦始皇 ), decided to build a gigantic army, made of clay, to either protect himself from evil spirits after death, or continue his rule after he would die. The Army consists of horses, soldiers, archers, and infantry, and continues to attract people in large numbers.
