Weighted Device Exercises, also known as Spinal Weighting, are scoliosis exercises that are widely practiced among different scoliosis treatment providers. These exercises are designed to train the auxiliary muscles in the back to support the spine in a way that encourages straightening. Our clinical studies support that these exercises can be effective in fixing spines with scoliosis. Spinal weighting should not be relied on as a standalone exercise for treating scoliosis, especially in growing spines that are beyond 25 degrees. Scoliosis Weighted Device Exercises go by many different names depending on the treatment provider. These names include Spinal Weighting, Weighted Cantilevers, Neuromuscular Re-Education, Auto Response Training, Torso Trainers, Sensorimotor Re-Education, and more. As mentioned above, these exercises can be effective, but should not be relied on by themselves in growing spines that are beyond 25 degrees. While each of these exercises tends to be similar across different scoliosis treatment providers, the comprehensive program that they are incorporated into are not the same. Scoliosis Care Centers has had great success with these exercises largely in part because they are accompanied by our Silicon Valley Brace.
Bracing + Spinal Weighting
Scoliosis braces often get flack for causing back muscles to weaken because of atrophy. It makes sense that the back muscles would lose strength from lack of use similar to the way a broken arm loses strength after being in a cast for an extensive period. While this is all true, it should not be used as a reason to discredit the value of a scoliosis brace. It also makes logical sense that for a bone to grow straight, it needs rigid support to allow it to do so. Just like with a broken arm being put in a cast, a scoliosis brace helps the spine grow straight during adolescent growth. When bracing is used in tandem with scoliosis weighted devices, it allows the spine to straighten while also preventing the back muscles from atrophy.
