On 28 February, 2018, Ukraine’s state natural gas company Naftogaz won the epic four-year legal battle against the Russian gas giant Gazprom in the Stockholm arbitration tribunal. This is the first time Ukraine beat the Russian monopolist in a European court. Gazprom got used to dictating its terms to Ukraine under pressure of Russian gas blackmail for decades and it’s a great blow to Russia’s ego. According to the decision of the arbitration court, Gazprom now owes Naftogaz a total of $2.56 BILLIONS. Each day of non-payment increases the amount of debt by $0.5 million. Overnight into 1 March, 2018, Russia cut off the gas supply to Ukraine amid abnormal frosts, and lowered pressure of transit gas to make it look like Ukraine is taking gas from the transit gas pipe.
