In this Physics video in Hindi for class 12 we derived potential energy of an electric dipole placed in an external uniform electric field. For different orientation dipole has different electric potential energy. Because, the electric field applies torque on the dipole and to rotate that electric dipole we need to provide some energy and that energy is stored in the system of the dipole and the external electric field. So, we can say, for different orientation the electric dipole has different electric potential energy. We derived the expression of potential energy in terms of the angle made by the direction of the electric dipole moment and the direction of the external uniform electric field. We found that the potential energy is the negative of the dot product of dipole moment and the electric field.
