Wingshooting Africa and Bird hunting South Africa Holidays
Season 2019
Introduction.
In the backdrop to the Maluti Mountain range, in-between the Orange River in the south and the Vaal River in the north, is the rolling hill country side with lush green grass and small lakes scattered all around. This is the Eastern Free State, where you will find Tweespruit. This beautiful little town is about a 1 hours drive East of Bloemfontein and is the home of Father Claerhout, one of South Africa's most prolific and respected artists. This is where you will find the home of Four Seasons Wingshooting Holidays, with plains game hunting and mixed bird shooting and hunting for the more adventurous hunter.
Upon arrival, you will be shown to your accommodation. This will either be in the main house or from a selection of rooms surrounding the lodge compound. Drinks will be provided in the lodge bar and then if you're not too tired from the travelling we can set off for your first Rock Pigeon Shooting ( Speckled Pigeon ) session .
That evening, you will be treated to a fresh cooked meal in the main dining room. After dinner, you may retire to the patio and bar and enjoy a nightcap in front of an open fire. The night sky will be very clear and the stars very sparkling. You'll wonder why life couldn't always be like this.
South Africa is famous for its all year round Speckled Pigeon shooting (rock pigeon) and dove Hunting. The Pigeons swarm into the sunflower and maize fields in there thousands. Species available to shoot between March & August include: Rock Pigeons, Speckled Pigeons, Doves, Egyptian Geese, Spurwing Geese, Duck, Guinea-fowl, Francolin and Partridges.
The first day will start at approximately 06.00 hrs if you wish to go and shoot Egyptian and Spurwing Geese from pit-blinds, over decoys in furrowed winter wheat fields. Or you can start the morning flighting Ducks as they move up and down the dam systems -- also starting at about 06.00 hrs. You will then return to the Lodge for a lovely home cooked breakfast around 09.30 - 10.00 am. Those who wish to take it a little easier may snooze until breakfast.
After a hearty al-fresco breakfast, you will have a choice to shoot Speckled Pigeons over sunflowers from a hide using a magnet or, depending on the flight line coming to the field it's possible to shoot flighting Rock Pigeons, these can be very challenging! They flight in to the fields from about 10.00 hrs until 13.00 hrs where they spend the next 2 - 3 hrs wheeling around amongst the sun flower fields, and then they fly back to the distant mountains from 13.00 hrs until 16.00 hrs. These Africain pigeons fly in Partridge like coveys between a foot off the ground to 200 feet up.
A good pair of sunglasses are recommended as these South Africa Pigeons flying against a pale blue sky can tire the eyes very quickly.
