A whimsical look at the New York City Subway System circa 1950. This film was produced by the Department of Transportation and was probably shown to students, civic groups, and the like. The impression that comes across is that of a strong, efficiently-functioning transit system. While I'm sure there were problems even then, what a contrast with the utter dysfunction that plagued the system during the subsequent decades. There is even a scene where the Second Avenue Subway gets a mention as a "proposed" project. At an estimated 5 million dollars a mile. Well, here we are in 2010 and it is finally being built (we hope), although I suspect that the price tag is just a bit higher today...
