Sand and rock accumulated around the Pohoiki Boat Ramp following the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, cutting it off entirely with a wall of sand 200 feet wide and 20 feet high. Earlier this month Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) released a study addressing the feasibility of reopening Pohoiki Boat Ramp by removing a channel of sand and constructing two large jetties to impede the sand from returning quickly, and then proposed a possible alternative ramp location.
