Sure, your phone has several vibration profiles that might mean something to you. But Neil Movva is going far beyond that. His talk at the 2015 Hackaday SuperConference covers simple vibration motors, linear actuators, and going deep into vibration frequency tuning to trick the brain into feeling textures. He applied this knowledge in his Pathfinder project. It seeks to help the visually impaired better navigate and perceive their environment by pairing distance sensing with better haptic feedback.
