'Paul' is a powerful song about bullying, the third single from Michael Waugh's debut album 'What We Might Be' (available through MGM distribution, produced by Shane Nicholson).
Michael said: 'This is a story about a time when bullying was happening to me and to a friend of mine at school. At the time, I didn’t think it would ever stop.
It gets better.
In writing the song, I wanted to take the words that had been used to hurt us (and, maybe, people like us) and take them back – to make them about our power and strength and ability to survive. Because not all of us do.
The title of the CD comes from the last chorus of this song: ‘you don’t know what we might be.’ I had no idea at the time when the bullying was happening that I would be able to get out of it and be who I am now. It gets better. I got to make ‘What We Might Be’ – a collection of stories about where I have come from and reflecting on where I’ve come to. Paul didn’t have that opportunity.
My family and their love for me saved my life. A thoughtful teacher and her passion for the arts saved my life. Having music saved my life.
The experiences in the song informed my decision to work as a teacher in schools. The cast and crew of this video were students that I’ve worked with in my teaching career – some are pursuing acting, some medicine, some law, some are still not sure – but all of them are strong, confident, and talented young people and I'm lucky to have been part of their journey. It was an amazing experience to be able to hand my story and song over to them and I’m so proud of what they achieved in this video (particularly James Vinson, the director and editor). I got to collaborate on making a piece of art with talented artists that my students grew up to be.
I grew up to make this song and music video with:
Shane Nicholson (Producer, Guitars, Drums, Bass, Piano)
Kate Crowley (Backing Vocals)
James Vinson (Video Director and Editor)
Jeremy Teh (Cinematographer)
Ned Napier (as Paul) with Tristan Cliff, Rob Fraser, Alex Mitchell, Catriona Miriklis, Dan Roberts, (Actors)
