LIVE: Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial begins

Ruptly is live from US Senate in Washington DC on Tuesday, November 21, as US President Donald Trump’s Senate Impeachment trial is set to begin. On Wednesday, January 15, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named the impeachment managers who will serve as prosecutors in the Senate impeachment trial. They are Intelligence Chairman Adam B. Schiff, Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Sylvia Garcia, Val Demings, Zoe Lofgren and Jason Crow. The US House of Representatives voted in December to approve two articles of impeachment against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump is the third US President in history to be impeached. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached by the House, only to be later acquitted by the Senate. House Democrats crafted the articles of impeachment after weeks of closed-door depositions with 17 government witnesses, and televised public hearings with many of those officials, relating to the president’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
