The opera was commissioned by Prof. Crawford H. Greenewalt, Jr., the director of the archaeological site of Sardis in today's Manisa, Turkey. In ancient times the Phrygian king Midas was said to have washed away his “golden touch” in the Pactolus river, which flows through Sardis; and from that time on, the inhabitants of Sardis, the Lydians, became the richest people in the world. They invented coinage and conquered all of western Anatolia. Midas is also said to have judged a musical contest between the god Apollo and the demi-god Pan. This contest is narrated in this opera by Kamran Ince and the place this ancient contest was held is the exact place where Bilkent Symphony Orchestra performs in this video.
