As the Chinese National Anthem Law reaches its second reading, the atmosphere on the streets of Hong Kong is tense.

Groups of pro-democracy supporters have assembled across the city to register their anger against the proposed legislation, as police are fire pepper balls at them in an attempt to disperse the “illegal gatherings”.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are debating a bill criminalising disrespectful actions towards the Chinese national anthem.

Pro-Beijing officials argue the law will foster a ‘patriotic spirit and socialist values’ but Hongkongers aren’t convinced.

One protester, only giving her name as Mary for fear of retribution, told the press she worries China is trying to impose its values and system on Hong Kong.

The bill was proposed last year after Hong Kong football supporters jeered the anthem during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
