Tensions have erupted at a march against China’s proposed ‘Security Law’.

If passed the law would ban “treason, secession, sedition and subversion” in the region.

However, there is concern it would give Chinese agents the authority to arbitrarily shut down activities deemed to be “pro-democracy”.

The law, expected to be passed on May 28, would bypass the city’s legislature.

Demonstrators claim it would jeopardise the “one country, two systems” framework that differentiates the city from the mainland.

Police fired several rounds of tear gas in an attempt to disperse the thousands of demonstrators. Police say 120 have been arrested.
