Horst Seehofer, leader of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), the sister party of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), confirmed that his party are ready to take the next steps in forming a grand coalition with Schulz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) after a CSU board meeting in Munich on Monday. The terms of the coalition are not expected to "substantially change the results of exploratory talks" that have been ongoing between the CDU/CSU and SPD. "We have submitted a clear vote to begin coalition negotiations, because we are very satisfied with the result of exploratory talks with the SPD," confirmed the CSU's General Secretary, Andreas Scheuer. The SPD are expected to cast their vote on beginning coalition negotiations at a special party convention on January 21.
