We have two hitches here today that fit the Prius. On the top we have a Draw-Tite Class 1 trailer hitch receiver, and then on the bottom we have a CURT Class 1 trailer hitch receiver. First we'll give you a brief summary about the differences between our hitches. In regards to appearance, we found that the CURT hitch here, with our personal opinion, is the better looking hitch here, so we'll give that one a win. As far as recreational use goes, we found that the Draw-Tite hitch has a slight advantage over the CURT hitch because there is no recommendation for use of a safety strap if you're using it for a non-trailer application. Now in my personal opinion, if I personally owned a Prius, I'd be leaning towards the CURT hitch myself because I feel that it looks the best on the vehicle. The color gives it a nice finished look and doesn't take away from any of the attractive, stylish lines on the back of the vehicle. The first difference that we found between our two hitches is in regards to appearance. If we have a look here at our CURT hitch, at the end of our receiver we'll find this collar that's welded on. This helps give us a nice finished look underneath the vehicle, whereas on our Draw-Tite hitch, we don't have that collar. It's just the cut-off, square, rectangular section of the receiver. If we have a look at the Prius that we have in here today, we have the Draw-Tite hitch installed. You can easily notice this because it doesn't have the collar on the back of it. The CURT hitch is going to look very similar to the Draw-Tite hitch when it's in the vehicle. It'll be completely hidden behind the underbody panels and the bottom portion of our fascia. The only part you'll see in either hitch is the receiver hanging down itself. In regards to the collar, it's more of a personal preference. You either want it because it gives a nice finished look, or you don't like it, don't really care about it, because without having it the hitch is a little bit more hidden and less visible. One other difference that we noticed between our two hitches here today is in regards to recreational use. Our CURT hitch, they do recommend the use of a stabilization strap to help support any non-trailer loads, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier, whereas on our Draw-Tite hitch, there is no recommendation for needing to use a strap when you're using it for a non-trailer application. A lot of our customers are purchasing a hitch for a Prius for use with bike racks, and if you didn't want to use a strap, the Draw-Tite hitch does give you a little bit more peace of mind. Now other than those two differences that we pointed out, these hitches are actually very, very similar. They both have a very similar design and will bolt behind the bumper beam on your vehicle. No drilling or modification required there. Both of these are also Class 1 hitches and they both feature the exact same weight capacities. They both have a 200 pound max tongue weight rating and a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating. Now we do want to make sure that we do consult with the owner's manual of our Prius and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. We'll go by whichever number's less. You'll also notice both of our hitches feature the exact same style of safety chain loops with a rolled tubular steel design. They're easy to attach safety chains from our trailer with. They both also feature the industry-standard 1/2" diameter hitch pin hole that you use with a separate pin and clip to secure any of your hitch-mounted accessories. One final similarity that we wanted to point out between our hitches here is they both are going to offer the exact same amount of clearance around the fascia opening, and they're both going to offer about the same amount of ground clearance, so we don't have to worry about the hitch bottoming out if we pull into a very steep driveway since it is tucked up really tight up against the fascia. That'll complete our look at the best trailer hitch options for the Toyota Prius. We hope you find this video helpful and informative in your trailer hitch purchasing decision.
