Phoneme /fōnēm/Plural-Phonemes
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in any language.
A phoneme does not stand or represent anything if left alone.
A baby makes his first sound, /mah/ /mah/ or /dah/ /dah/.
Blend the two sounds to form a baby’s first words:
/mah/+/mah/= mama
/dah/+/dah/=dada
Each letter of the English alphabet has its own sound.
Words are formed by blending these individual sounds.
Phonemes are placed between two forward slashes “/ /”.
The phoneme /b/ represents the sound that the letter b makes.

Long vowel sounds
Short a sound as in the word cat is represented as: /kat/
