Chinese Foreign Ministry official Wu Dawei ended a five-day trip to Pyongyang on Friday, saying that there had been a "deep exchange of views" in meetings with his North Korean counterparts.
Wu, China's top nuclear envoy, is in North Korea to discuss stalled six-nation talks aimed at ending the country's nuclear programme, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
"Everyone is making an effort," he said.
North Korea withdrew from the talks that also involve Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States five years ago.
In September, Pyongyang called for a new round of talks without preconditions.
The US first wants to see concrete steps by North Korea to demonstrate its sincerity about denuclearisation.
In recent weeks there has been a series of consultations about restarting talks between the six countries involved.
