Abdominal scan is normally done in the 2nd trimester and the 3rd trimester. Basically when the uterus is made out from the abdomen, that is after 12 weeks of pregnancy till term, the uterus is palpable for abdomen and it is easy for the sonologist to do a scan per abdomen. Transvaginal scan is done only when there is difficulty in getting the uterus or the contents of the uterus by abdominal scan. Transvaginally the approximity of the uterus to the probe is nearer so the pictures will be clearer and the detail of the uterus can be made clearer in less than 12 weeks of time or to be precise, in less than 6 to 8 weeks of time.
