German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christofer Burger said the reason for the arrest of a British Embassy worker wasn’t acceptable, speaking at a news conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

The statement comes as a 57-year old British national was detained a day earlier after being accused of spying on behalf of a Russian intelligence agency.

“We are taking indications of intelligence activity of the arrestee in the name of a Russian intelligence agency very seriously. Secret service espionage of a close allied partner on German soil isn’t something acceptable”, commented Burger.

“That’s why we will follow the further investigation of the General Prosecution Office very closely”, added Burger.

The investigation leading up to the arrest has been a joint effort between the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and the German authorities.

A court hearing was scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
