A crowd of demonstrators gathered once again for a rally in front of the Cuban Embassy in Madrid to show solidarity with anti-government protests taking place in Cuba, on Tuesday.
Protesters were heard chanting ‘killers’ and ‘we are not afraid’, and carrying signs calling for freedom of speech.
The leader of the Madrid branch of the far-right party Vox, Rocio Monasterio joined the protest as well.
“They should go live there and they would know how it feels to starve, how it feels not being able to eat meat every day, how it feels not being able to have a job in freedom and how it feels not being able to have political ideas, because this is what’s going on today in Cuba. These communists are caviar communists, they don’t have a clue about what they’re talking about,” said Monasterio.
A similar rally took place on Monday outside the Cuban embassy.
The unrest in Cuba was triggered by the island nation’s worsening economic crisis, record numbers of COVID-19 cases and lack of basic goods.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel accused the US of ‘orchestrating’ the unrest via social media campaigns and by sending ‘mercenaries’ to the country.
SOT, Rocio Monasterio, Vox leader in the Community of Madrid (Spanish): “They should go live there and they would know how it feels to starve, how it feels not being able to eat meat everyday, how it feels not being able to have a job in freedom and how it feels not being able to have political ideas, because this is what’s going on today in Cuba. These communists are caviar communists, they don’t have a clue about what they’re talking about, like many spokespersons, among others, those in the Assembly of Madrid, those in Podemos and Sanchez’s Government, they talk so much about the people, but when it’s time to defend the people, they’re not here.”
SOT, Jean Pierre, Protester (Spanish): “We’ve been waiting for 62 years, through the peaceful way, trying to solve it, to make them understand and leave, but they don’t do it because they don’t want to leave the power, and they kill even kids to stay there, because they killed a 13-year-old kid yesterday, they beat women, make disappear the youngsters that think differently, enough already of the dictatorship, Diaz Canel, we’re going to get you and the Castros. Hail Cuba libre.”
SOT, Sonia, Protester (Spanish): “We’re here to ask for help and cry for freedom because we’re seeing what’s going on in our country, because they’re killing our brothers, our sons, our relatives, they’re starving them to death, they’re beating them, shooting them, they killed a 13-year-old kid a few days ago, today, I just saw another video, they shot a woman just because she was on the streets asking for food and medicines.”
SOT, Alvaro Aguilera, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Madrid and Coordinator of Izquierda Unida Madrid (Spanish): “It was a totally peaceful act, to support the revolution and sovereignty of the Cuban people and now we’re calmly leaving after demanding sovereignty for the Cuban people and freedom from the imperialist interferences in their decisions.”
