At least 1,000 protesters marched through the streets of Barcelona, on the fourth anniversary of the Catalan independence referendum, on Friday.

Republic Defence Committee (CDRs) called for the protest on social media.

A group of protesters built a barricade of industrial bins, setting them fire. Police intervened, eventually dispersed the protest. At least four people were arrested.

On 1 October 2017, the regional government of Catalonia called for an independence referendum. After the vote, the Catalan authorities reported a turnout of 42.3 percent and approval of around 90 percent of voters for independence from Spain. The referendum led to a constitutional crisis with the proclamation of an “independent republic” a few weeks later and the subsequent disempowerment of the Catalan regional government by the Spanish government. New regional parliament elections followed in December 2017.
