At least 16 people were killed during a five-hour siege by Islamic extremists in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu.

A car bomb was detonated before armed al-Shabab militants stormed the beachside Elite Hotel.

Witnesses claim the blast was heard across the Somali capital.

Attackers seized hostages and exchanged fire with security forces outside for over four hours.

Somali officials said more than 200 people were rescued from the hotel.
