A magnitude 6.2 earthquake was recorded off the coast of northern California early Monday afternoon, the US Geological Survey said. According to the US Geological Survey, the center of the earthquake that occurred at night was concentrated in the Pacific Ocean, about 24 miles west of Petrolia and 44 miles southwest of Eureka. Numerous aftershocks up to magnitude 4 are still being hit in the area, according to government officials. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is actively monitoring the situation, the agency said in a tweet. According to preliminary estimates, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.8 points, but soon the geological survey clarified and increased to 6.2. The tremor was felt throughout the northern part of the state and, in the south, as far as the Bay Area. Moderate to severe tremors were recorded by the seismic network along the coast. The earthquake was felt even in San Francisco, about 250 miles from Petrolia.
Tsunami is not expected, no warning received.
