Almost 400 pilot whales have died after the worst mass stranding recorded in Australia.

A rescue operation successfully saved 50 of the 500 whales stranded off Tasmania’s remote west coast. Rescuers are racing against time to save another 30 animals.

Marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta said the species is often involved in such incidents: “They’re very social animals and they are found in large groups, also known as pods, and unfortunately in this case, we might have had a misadventure or some individuals may have navigated in the wrong way and now they’ve become stuck and stranded.”

Tasmania is prone to mass stranding: the last incident occurred in 2009 and affected about 200 pilot whiles.
