‘Pig Heart… Man? The First GM Animal Organ Transplant’

A US man has become the first to receive a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig.

David Bennett, 57, was too sick for a human heart with the procedure deemed the last chance of saving his life.

While it’s too soon to know if the operation was successful, doctors say he is doing well three days after surgery.

A shortage of human organ donations had led surgeons to consider animal organs instead.

Surgeons used a heart from a pig who’d undergone gene-editing to remove a sugar in its cells that’s responsible for organ rejection.
