Doctors in NYU Langone Health successfully transplanted a pig’s kidney to a human recipient in NYU Langone’s campus in Manhattan on September 25.
The recipient was kept alive via a ventilator for 54 hours, during that time the function and acceptance of the new kidney was studied.
The process known as xenotransplantation involved interspecies transplantation. This was the first successful attempt at a xenotransplantation involving a genetically modified animal and a human.
Director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, Robert Montgomery explained the importance of the successful attempt: “This is a transformative moment in organ transplantation,” Montgomery said on Thursday.
“The medical and scientific communities have been working toward xenotransplantation to sustain human life for more than 50 years. There have been many hurdles along the way, but our most recent procedure significantly moves these endeavors forward. This research provides new hope for an unlimited supply of organs, a potential game-changer for the field of transplantation and those now dying for want of an organ,” he added.
The pig used was genetically modified to have a special alpha-gal biomolecule which is responsible for successful pig-human xenografts.
