Macao residents attended several polling venues to cast their votes for the Legislative Assembly elections on Sunday.

With an estimate of over 320,000 Macao eligible voters to cast their vote, the turnout was reported to be at 27.3 per cent a couple of hours before poll closing.

21 candidates were disqualified from the election for failing to uphold the Macao Basic Law or for being ‘disloyal’ to Macao in early July.

Three ‘pro-democracy lists appealed to the Court of Final Appeal against the Macao Electoral Affairs Committee (CAEL) to disqualify their candidates.

The top court of Macao rejected the appeal, resulting in the contest between the pro-establishment candidates for the 14 directly elected seats. Mr. Ho lat Seng, the Chief Executive of Macao, stated, “I have not classified the pro-democracy camp or the non-pro-democracy camp.

Many media have interviewed me in the past. I treat them all equally. You can bring out the issue. If you are not satisfied with it, there is no specific party standing as the opposition camp in Macao.”

The legislative election will be composed of 33 seats, with 14 directly elected by all electorates and another 12 indirectly elected seats will be determined through professional sectors. The remaining seven lawmakers will be appointed by the Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. Ho Iat Seng, 15 days after the polling day.
