Goat and rescue rhino become best friends

Every morning, this man takes a rhino for a 4-hour walk. Lucas is Swazi’s caregiver. Also joining them on their daily walks is Swazi’s best friend, Bokkie.

Swazi, a critically endangered black rhino, was rescued as a baby and now lives at South Africa’s Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, a place that specializes in the care of orphaned, injured or sick rhinos. Yeah, this is what the morning time looks and sounds like here. In what may be the world’s cutest walk, Swazi and Bokkie are typically seen following Lucas.

But just like humans, it’s easy for Swazi to find reasons to not go on her walks. Here, she stopped to wrestle with a Land Cruiser. Then proceeds to check out the food supplies as Lucas and Bokkie wait for her. The walk was still not happening. Swazi checked out her reflection and then moves to the kitchen. She then wanted to play with the cat and finally get some scratches before heading for the walk.

These walks are a critical part of Swazi’s development, providing much-needed stimulation. And Bokkie is much more than a play mate for Swazi. They have been together since they were both a few weeks old. With no mother to show Swazi, Bokkie has taken on the role of showing her friend what to eat.

Bokkie also makes sure that Swazi knows she’s loved. Given Swazi’s charming and inquisitive personality, she’s managed to make many friends at the sanctuary. Here, Swazi can be seen hanging with Koa from elite K-9 unit.

While other rhinos were tucked in for the night, Swazi preferred to spend some time with Koa. The sanctuary was founded by Petronel Nieuwoudt who’s playing a vital role in preventing these magnificent creatures from going extinct.
