German police arrested four people over an alleged planned attack on a synagogue in Hagen on Thursday. The planned attack came ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday Yom Kipur.

Hagen police confirmed they arrested four people after their investigation into the threat and searching several local buildings.

The arrests came after a massive police deployment on Wednesday night near the synagogue. The synagogue was forced to cancel a holiday event due to the threat.

State premier of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet suggested that the foiled attack likely had an ‘Islamist motive.’

The incident is currently being investigated by local police alongside German terrorism authorities according to prosecutors in Dusseldorf.
