Germany: Laschet praises security agencies for response to suspected synagogue attack

CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet expressed solidarity with Germany’s Jewish citizens following a foiled suspected attack on a synagogue in Hagen, in a speech made at a campaign rally in Bremen on Thursday.

“It is good that the security agencies heard in good time what was happening there, we all remember the radical right-wing attack in Halle two years ago, also on Yom Kippur, and I am glad that we were able to make sure that nothing happened [today],” he said.

German police arrested four people over the alleged planned attack on a synagogue in Hagen on Thursday. The planned attack came ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday Yom Kipur.

Hagen police confirmed they arrested four people after their investigation into the threat and searching several local buildings.

The arrests came after a massive police deployment on Wednesday night near the synagogue. The synagogue was forced to cancel a holiday event due to the threat.

The incident is currently being investigated by local police alongside German terrorism authorities according to prosecutors in Dusseldorf.

Laschet was in Bremen as part of his 2021 federal election campaign ahead of the nationwide vote on September 26.
