Qassam Soleimani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds force was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Iraq early on Friday, January 3. The strike on his convoy at Baghdad International airport also killed Abul Mahdi al-Muhandis, leader of the powerful Hashd al-Shaabi militia Kataib Hezbollah. The U.S. said Solemani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. the 62-year-old was widely seen as the second most powerful figure in Iran, behind supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. iran has vowed "severe revenge" on those responsible for his death. The killing marks a major escalation in tensions between Iran and the U.S. Meanwhile 3,000 additional American troops will be sent to the Middle East as a precaution.
