WordPress Customizer in 3 Different Themes - Where To Find It & How To Use It | WP Learning Lab
The WordPress customizer has a lot of options that let you change the look of a website without any code, but with a live preview. The live preview functionality is pretty sweet. The usefulness of the customizer varies greatly from theme to theme. From what I've found, the X Theme is the one that utilizes the customizer the most and to greatest effect.
Getting the WordPress customizer is really quite simple. Log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Appearance and click on Customize.
This will load a visual editor, which is the customizer.
The most interesting part of the customizer is that theme and plugin developers are able to extend its functionality to do some incredible things.
The X Theme can be edited almost entirely in the WordPress Customizer.
The first theme I'm going to show you in this tutorial is the Avada theme. In the customizer it is able to edit:
1. Site Identity
2. Colors
3. Header image
4. Background image
5. Menus
6. Widgets
7. Static Front Page
8. Cornerstone (which is an Avada-theme specific page editor)
9. Additional CSS
Next, we'll be checking out the customizer for the 2017 WordPress theme. It can edit:
1. Site identity
2. Colors
3. Header media
4. Menus
5. Widgets
6. Static front page
7. Cornerstone appears here again because the plugin is still active without the Avada theme being active
8. Additional CSS
The X Theme is next and it has a boat-load of things you can edit in the customizer. So many that I can't list them all here, but included is:
1. Layout and design
2. Typography
3. Buttons
4. Header
5. Footer
6. Portfolio
7. Social
8. Site icons
9. Custom
10. Menus
11. Widgets
12. And many more
A very cool feature of the WordPress Customizer is that you can edit and customize a theme before you even activate it on the site. This has been a big problem in the past causing webmasters to use a development domain or local site to customize a new theme before moving it to the live site.
The X Theme uses this feature to the maximum so you can conceivable create an 100% new look for your site in customizer while your site runs on the current theme. Them, when you're ready, you can Save & Activate to move your customizer settings to live.
So if you're looking for ways to spice up your WordPress theme, the WordPress customizer is a great editor to look into.
