TRANSCRIPT I took the position and still take the position that Islam is not a religion of peace. In fact it's only one aspect of Islam that is a religion. Islam is a political philosophy. It is a a total idea of how human affairs should be run. And in that political doctrine there's a lot of violence a lot of violence in it. So I'm taking the position: Islam is not a religion of peace. Muslims could become peaceful people, again if they go through this process of enlightenment. And if Muslims clearly and openly reject the parts in the Koran that mandate violence and if they openly and clearly reject Mohammed's violent legacy and refuse to follow in his footsteps. In that sense. So let's take the example, I would say I hope it doesn't happen but you know it has happened several times and it is going to happen again but that there's a mass shooting and it's perpetrated by, a man or a man shouting Allahu Akbar. And it is apparent that the perpetrator is motivated by. his conviction, his belief in Islam. And then president Elect Donald Trump gets up and says this is a religion of peace. It has nothing to do with Islam. The perpetrator is insane or, mentally disturbed, or some other excuse. For the voter sitting in Ohio or in Tennessee or in New York. The first thing that goes in your head is the president elect is just not telling the truth. He is lying to us and, worse than that, voters then, don't only lose faith in the men and women they elected to office, they lose faith in the institutions of government. And I know that people on the left, are driven by good intentions to say it's a religion of peace and to try and separate the religion from from the terrorist act and from the actor. But it doesn't help, protect, innocent Muslims from bigotry or anything else because it in fact makes people think, people become more and more suspicious of Muslims. It's counterproductive. However you put it. So when President Obama, is confronted with the beheading of journalists, and aid workers and he goes on an international platform the United Nations and says: This has nothing to do with Islam. The effect of that is not that Muslims feel more protected. The effect of that is that people not only distrust him and distrust the United States government but that they become more anti-Muslim. I think it's it would be much better if liberals especially but if everybody just had an honest and open recognition of the fact that Islam is not a religion of peace and that it's extremely important then to talk about Muslims and the diversity among Muslims. There are Muslims who take their faith, to mean, and take it literally and commit violent acts. And it's completely justified to be afraid of those Muslims. On the other hand there are millions and millions of Muslims who do not use their faith or use their faith as a means of violence. And it's extremely important to protect them. But even more importantly if we wanted to deal with the violent minority we have to engage the peaceful Muslim majority in honest in an honest conversation about the basic tenets of Islam.
