New York is one of the most influential cities in the world; economically, culturally and diplomatically it is a powerhouse. It’s population also largely speaks English, a legacy America has from it’s past as a British colony. But the English were not the first Europeans to settle New York. Before St Georges Cross was hoisted over New York; the Dutch flag flew over New Amsterdam – these places being one and the same.
So how did the Dutch come to colonise here and how did the English manage to steal this jewel away from them?
