Kawhi Leonard requested a trade from the Spurs and might be teaming up with LeBron James on the Lakers. NBA Free Agency is crazy, but people aren’t thinking about how Kawhi Leonard impacts LeBron’s decision in the NBA offseason.
The LeBron James Free agency sweepstakes are underway and while everyone is concerned with that, not too many people were thinking about Kawhi Leonard. That is until he requested a trade from the Spurs. On top of that, there’s this one trade involving him that could change a lot in the NBA.
Kawhi Leonard might be the most important player in this offseason. While he’s not a free agent, the Spurs can offer him a maximum contract extension for 5 years worth $219 million. Now that he’s requested a trade, it opens a lot of doors. What do you think will happen with Kawhi?
Kawhi Leonard is one of those special talents. Michael Jordan called him the best two way player in the NBA. He’s capable of carrying a team by himself. He could hit a game winning 3 and game winning block in the same game. Oh wait, he did that. He can lock down the opposing team’s best player. With all the discord amongst the Spurs organization with their best player, there is real talk about Kawhi Leonard not accepting the extension and being dealt away since Kawhi has not played with a nagging injury. What made this more interesting was the fact that the Spurs declined a trade offer from the Celtics for Kawhi Leonard and now that Kyrie hasn’t given the Celtics a guarantee that he will sign with the Celtics, there might be a trade offer that the Celtics offer Kyrie for Kawhi if both players are unhappy with their situation. Now that’s a pretty far out there trade that could change a lot and also pave the way for LeBron to join the Celtics since Kyrie would not be there. Since Kawhi has now requested for a trade, the Celtics have the assets to make any trade happen. The Spurs still have the choice whether to trade Kawhi Leonard like the Cavs did with Kyrie or keep him so that he may come around. All of this is definitely a first for the Spurs organization.
But that’s still far-fetched. What’s more realistic is Kawhi’s decision impacting LeBron. If Kawhi goes somewhere else other than the Spurs like the Lakers which is on top of Kawhi’s preferred destinations, LeBron can make a more informed decision and Kawhi definitely makes a destination more appealing to LeBron. If Kawhi goes to Boston for Kyrie, then the Celtics become an appealing situation. The Spurs won’t deal Kawhi after LeBron’s decision, but LeBron’s decision will be affected by Kawhi Leonard the most. Now, Popovich is trying to meet with Kawhi to figure out what is going on. And he’s trying to meet with LeBron as well.
Imagine LeBron pairing up with Kawhi as I said in my last video. Now that is a deadly combination. Two players who can pretty do everything on the court and have high basketball IQ. I think LeBron will wait to see how the Kawhi situation develops before making any sort of commitments. If Kawhi goes somewhere other than the Spurs which is seeming more likely at this moment in time, I don’t think LeBron wants to have to deal with another title contender and he don’t want those problems. Paul George is a free agent that at this point seems like he will tag along with LeBron if he goes to LA, especially after the disaster of a season in OKC. Kyrie virtually makes the Celtics a non-destination for LeBron and I know that Kyrie might want to get more money by being a free agent instead of signing an extension, but Danny Ainge can trade anyone and everyone. I can imagine LeBron just sitting back, sipping on some wine and fantasizing about all the options he has. His family is very important and just because his son might be going to Sierra Canyon in Cali, doesn’t mean LeBron will follow. LeBron’s son is trying to make the NBA too and he’s also teaming up with Pippen’s son and Kenyon MArtin’s son so there’s that. Like father, like son right, but seriously, Kawhi Leonard is so important in this offseason and he might just be the piece that affect LeBron’s decision the most. But what do you think? Where will Kawhi end up? What about LeBron?
