He developed a reputation of being generous and kind and it's rumored he gave away his fortune to help poor kids and unmarried women. When he died he became a patron Saint of children and was given his own holiday on the 6th of December. Later, the Catholic church got involved and ended up moving his holiday to December 25th. The church also invented their own character named Kris Kringle who also became popular but even with with the rise of Kris, St. Nicholas still remained the most popular and people started referring to him as Sinter Klaas. During this time, in England they had a figure named, Father Christmas, who was depicted as the jolly, happy personification of the Christmas holiday. When Europeans started colonizing America all of these names and images of Santa merged together to become the Santa Claus we know today.
